Tom Dunn

Tom’s practice focuses on protecting brands and creative assets through trademark, copyright, and licensing law. In his trademark practice, Tom conducts pre-filing screening searches, drafts and files applications, prosecutes applications to registrations, and maintains and enforces those registrations both in the United States and internationally. A former English major, Tom enjoys working with words, and his legal work often turns on connotations, alliteration, double meanings, meter, internal rhyming, and other literary nuances, all of which he enjoys exploring to protect and advance his clients’ interests. Tom represents clients in adversarial matters before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as in state and federal courts.
Tom’s copyright practice involves registering and enforcing creative visual designs, literary works, visual works, and audio works, and includes such works as brand logos, software code, videos, and sound recordings. Tom started his career as a licensing attorney and has worked on a wide variety of contractual matters throughout his career, including Master Services Agreements (MSA), Software as a Service Agreements (SAAS), software development agreements, escrow agreements, and other IP-related agreements. Tom often assists with technology transactions by drafting conveyance language, ensuring the accuracy of IP titles, and overseeing the recording and releasing of security interests.
Prior to practicing law, Tom spent four years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps and seven years at Harvard University’s Office for Information Technology. The Marines instilled in Tom both discipline and the confidence to excel under pressure. His later experience at Harvard exposed him to creative branding and complex licensing agreements with many of the world’s leading technology companies.
Tom is an active member of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and currently serves on the Right of Publicity sub-committee for the 2026-2027 committee term. Tom has also served on committees for the Trademark Reporter, the INTA Bulletin, and the Trademark Office Practice Committee.
