Successful candidates will have a USPTO registration number, and three or more years of patent preparation and prosecution experience.  Expertise in software applications, machine learning, artificial intelligence, augmented/virtual reality, and/or optics is highly desired.  Seeking candidates with degrees in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical backgrounds.

Open Staff Positions

Patent Paralegal - Seattle, Washington

SUMMARY

The main function of the Patent Paralegal position is to provide support to attorneys and agents who specialize in intellectual property across a variety of technology areas, with a focus on computer-implemented methods.

 PATENT PARALEGAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 General Time/Work Management

  • Track Attorney Bar Dates, File By Dates and Docket Dates
  • Meet with assigned attorneys to confirm status of work on upcoming deadlines and develop a plan for meeting required dates.  Update necessary databases with data and documents to map progress in meeting deadlines. When necessary, work with clients to request changes to deadlines.

 Docketing Review

  • Review docketed items for assigned attorneys to ensure accuracy and inform Docketing Department of necessary changes.

 New Application Work

  • Complete administrative summaries
  • Enter drafts into AIM database and other client databases as necessary  
  • Schedule and conduct follow up meetings with inventors on a consistent basis for comments on drafts
  • Revise draft applications as needed or requested by attorneys
  • Transmit finals to inventors and follows up on signatures
  • Review/prepare application filing documents for attorney review
  • File necessary documents with the USPTO via EFS/Mail/Fax

 Prosecution Work

  • Review Office Actions for status and confirm required action with attorney
  • Prepare terminal disclaimers as needed
  • Prepare Information Disclosure Statements as needed
  • Prepare draft response for attorney completion as needed
  • Enter drafts and finals into AIM database
  • Follow up with client for comments/instructions when necessary
  • Prepare continuation/divisional/restriction requirement drafts using templates
  • Prepare Post Allowance review forms

  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor or Associates degree preferred
  • Minimum 1-2 years Patent Paralegal or Patent Docketing experience with thorough knowledge and significant understanding of the patent process, patent docketing and all aspects of US and foreign filings

 QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise independent judgment required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to utilize creative thinking to solve complex problems required
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail required
  • Proficient with the USPTO EFS filing system, MS Office, and other related databases
  • Ability to be resourceful, professional and able to work well under pressure required
  • Must be team-oriented and able to share information, goals, successes and failures with appropriate parties
  • Ability to recognize confidential information and to maintain confidentiality of such information required
  • A strong desire to take initiative with a self-starting and efficient work ethic

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
