Rusty is a partner in the firm and leads the International Practice Group. He offers extensive business and legal expertise in international portfolio, strategic planning, development, and management. This expertise is supported by Rusty’s hands-on technical experience gained while operating and repairing naval nuclear power plants, leading explosive ordinance disposal teams, and evaluating wide area wireless networks.
His broad technical experience is illustrated by the prosecution of patents involving audio and video digital signal processing, atomic force microscopy, bioinformatics, bioelectric sensors, business method patents, data encryption and storage devices, DVD players, electronic control systems, electric circuits, electric locks, engine controls, LED lasers, mechanical devices, medical devices (blood pressure measurement and associated signal processing), memory circuits, plasma displays, semiconductors, and software inventions.
Rusty is a former Intellectual Property Portfolio Manager, Chief Intellectual Property Counsel and a retired Captain (O6) in the US Navy. He enjoys sailing, bicycling, canoeing, hiking and camping.
Rusty has given lecturers at Johns Hopkins University, the IP-YLC/ABA conference in Washington D.C., at the Patenting Receptors, Screening Methods & In Silico Inventions conference in London, UK and has presented numerous CLEs on International Patent Practice.
Rusty received the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Two Navy Commendation Medals and three Navy Achievement Medals. He was a member of the U.S. Whitewater and Slalom Team from 1980 – 1983. He also received the rank of Eagle Scout.
