Dan focuses primarily in the area of IP strategy and client counseling. He works with clients on establishing IP strategies, policies, and procedures and assists in developing and managing their IP assets for optimal business return on investment.

Dan began his legal career with a national law firm based in Seattle, WA, where Dan eventually became a partner in the firm. Dan counseled and represented clients on a broad range of worldwide intellectual property matters, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications and trademark and copyright registrations, evaluation and resolution of infringement disputes, and drafting and negotiation of license agreements.  Clients included medical device manufacturers, aerospace manufacturers, university research departments, and software developers. 

Dan was at Microsoft Corporation for 10 years, last serving as Deputy General Counsel. In that role Dan managed the Microsoft Patent Group.  He was one of the key architects of the original Microsoft patent portfolio development strategy and was actively involved in building and managing the resultant portfolio,  negotiating patent cross-license agreements, developing Microsoft’s patent license program and providing counsel to clients and lawyers on a host of transactional and strategic matters.

Dan has been a frequent speaker and writer on intellectual property subjects, including speaking at the AIPLA Annual Meeting on “The Concerns of American Corporate Counsel in the New Millennium”, authoring Intellectual Property for the Internet (Wiley Law), Chapter 7, serving as a guest lecturer at the University of Washington, and conducting numerous CLE presentations for the Washington State Bar Association and Seattle King County Bar Association.

Dan has served on a variety of boards including the University of Iowa Law School Foundation and the Iowa State University, Engineering College Industrial Advisory Council. Dan served as the chair of the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association (AIPLA) Management of Intellectual Property Assets Subcommittee. Dan also held many positions with the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA), Intellectual and Industrial Property Section, including Director, Chair, Chair-Elect, VP, Secretary/Treasurer, and Newsletter Editor.

Dan has been active volunteer in the community, including board service and pro bono legal work.  He is currently Board president for Groundwire and is a member of Social Venture Partners and Pangea.
